United Kingdom is an international, cosmopolitan place to study. There is a strong international students presence in UK. This gives the students, opportunities to interact with students from different cultures and further enhance their understanding of the wider world.

Cost

The annual expense in a good British University varies from £7000 to £18000 and in private colleges, it could be anywhere between 2-4 lakhs. (There are many independent colleges in London with affiliation to universities in UK and abroad). It should also be noted that there are many so called educational institutes, without proper recognition who could be dubious and fly by night operates, whose sole interest is purely commercial.

International students are allowed to open a bank account in the UK, and some universities require their students to have a UK bank account. In any event, a bank account is very helpful to have in managing your finances,So you should plan to open a UK account.

Travelers Checks are useful to make transactions in UK till you open a bank account in the country. It may take a few weeks of time to open a new UK account and transfer money into it from your home country bank account.

Accommodation

For the international students most of the universities at UK provide on campus accommodation and also a variety of accommodation options are available to you. The college or university usually has halls of residence. If you are not offered on campus accommodation you can look for other accommodation options that will suit your monthly budget. 

Halls of residence offered by universities are large buildings, sometime divided into flats where you will have either a single room or share with another student. Generally the hall will provide basic furniture such as a bed, desk and chair and the rest you may need to buy. Self catered is another option for international students. Self Catered Halls are similar to halls of residence but the former allow the students to cook their own food on their own schedule.

Students choose to move into flats/houses in the second or third years of their campus life. If you do move into a flat or house, you will have to sign a tenancy agreement, which is a legal document outlining the terms of the tenancy. It will be better to seek the assistance of the international student advisor regarding the procedures.

Eligibility

For postgraduate programs, most of the good universities ask for a first class or high second class. In the undergraduate level most of the good universities look for a 60 % or higher. There are many students who have been admitted to colleges at UK with a second-class degree. But in independent colleges, there are no such rigid mark restrictions and any degree would be accepted. There are cases where significant work experience is considering lieu to a Bachelor’s degree.

‎Visa

For UK student visa, applications have to be made on IM2A forms, which are available, free of cost at the British Embassies. Along with Visa application fee and the required documents the application has to be submitted to the embassy.

Test Requirement

The normal English language proficiency requirement for most of the universities is 5.5 to 6.5 on IELTS or 79 on TOEFL (preferably IELTS with a score of 5.5to 6.5 or TOEFL of score 79) as these tests could be additional prerequisites while processing your visa

TOEFL

TOEFL is Test of English as a Foreign Language. The test is conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and the test fee is $160. Those who want to study in UK have to clear the test with definite scores.

IELTS

International English Language Testing System is normally known as IELTS which is administered by University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES) , British Council and IDP Education Australia.

The score of IELTS is valid for 2 years.

Scholarship

Unfortunately British universities do not provide any scholarships for average crossing Nigerian Students, with very rare exceptions in Doctorate level. Some universities may give students with good or exceptional backgrounds, a part tuition fee waiver. Some universities give discounts of 1000 - 1500 Pounds to students with good academic backgrounds.
Though financial aid is very little for international students, there are certain scholarships offered for study in UK managed by the British Council and other institutions. British Chevening Scholarships, Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships, Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships are some of the scholarships offered for post doctoral and research studies at UK.

Job Prospect

Students are permitted to work 20 hours per week during the course. It is not difficult to find some part time jobs to supplement your living expenses.
Future Job prospects for students are limited in UK and obtaining a work permit to stay back after studies is comparatively difficult. However, British degrees are valued and recognized all over the world, especially in India and the Middle East. These degrees provide a cutting edge for employment prospects.

Course schedule

British Degree courses tend to be shorter than those in other countries, which save student’s time and money. Although annual course fees in UK may be higher compared to course of equivalent course in Australia or U.S, but most courses here are shorter in duration and hence more economical. Most UK undergraduate degrees take only 3 years and most Master degrees can be completed in just one year.
The syllabus or curriculum is that of usual course degrees; the coaching and guidance are just more intensive and result oriented. This is a highly cost effective approach where students are permitted to work 20 hours per week during the course in shorter period of time and save on both tuition and living costs. The shorter study period also means they are able to start on a career earlier and become financially independent.
